PhD stipend in automation of textile sewing

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Materials and Production a PhD stipend is available within the doctoral program Materials Science, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. The stipend is open for appointment from 15.08.2024 or soon hereafter. The Department of Materials and Production (MP) is a wide-ranging research and educational environment at Aalborg University. The Department's mission is to meet the future's demands for new materials and production systems by directing the whole value chain from basic material understanding, materials' applications in mechanical constructions, industrial production, and management. The department has several strong, international, and innovative research groups which comprise everything from basic science to strategic and applied research. The activities encompass research as well as education within materials, mechanics, physics, production, and industrial management and innovation. Benefitting the industry and additional collaborators several innovative and unconventional collaborations have been and are developed through interdisciplinary co-operations. Thereby, as an PhD student at the department, you will become a part of an international research environment, where the focus is on innovation, knowledge sharing/building, and interdisciplinary collaborations.

Job description

This PhD project will focus on investigate, develop, and implement new production technologies for robotic sewing of textiles. The motivation for this is an industrial ambition to automate the sewing process because todays sewing is mainly carried out by skilled workers. The reason is that textiles is a very difficult material to handle automatically because of its flexible nature. The PhD will be a part of an industrial research project with the overall aim to make local cost-efficient sewing of various textiles and thereby eliminate large quantities of excess production due to a fast response to market demands with a short supply chain.

The PhD stipend will be carried out as part of the Department’s research on automation, robots and vison, where the tasks to be conducted may include:

  • Research related to the sewing processing
  • Development of industrial manufacturing equipment and integration with robots and sensors
  • Research in calibration, quality inspection and process monitoring
  • Implementation and demonstration of new technology supported by models and simulations
  • Development of hardware and software integrated with robotised processes

The successful applicant will have a documented experience within a subset of the fields of system design, robotics, process sensors, vision and integration, process planning and monitoring, textile monitoring and modelling.

The ideal candidate should have experience from participation in projects with industrial partners. It will be highly valued if the applicant has industrial experience within one or more of the following fields: robotics, sensors, textile and process automation and implementation of software and hardware.

Teaching within the area can be expected so an applicant with teaching experience (including PBL) and strong language skills will be preferred.

You may obtain further information from Associate Professor Morten Kristiansen, Department of Materials and Production, phone: +45 9940 8938, email: morten@mp.aau.dk  and Professor Thomas B. Moeslund, Faculty of IT and Design, phone: +45 2834 3530, email: tbm@create.aau.dk  concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.

For further information about stipends and salary as well as practical issues concerning the application procedure contact Ms. Helle S. Thomsen, The Doctoral School at The Faculty of Engineering and Science, email: helles@adm.aau.dk
