At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of the Built Environment in Aalborg, a PhD stipend is available within the doctoral programme "Civil Engineering" and the MSCA-Doctoral Network “RESCUER”. The stipend is open for appointment from 15 August 2024 or as soon hereafter.  The Department of the Built Environment focuses on the technical and scientific disciplines within the built environment. Research areas span from Indoor Environment and Energy Efficient buildings, Wind Turbines, Structural Design, Structural Materials, Geotechnical Engineering, Wave Energy to Traffic along with many other areas. The research is conducted in a national as well as an international research environment. The department takes on contract research for both public institutions and private companies. The research projects involve both theoretical research and in situ measurements along with laboratory experiments. Job description

The focus of this PhD position is to investigate the modeling fidelity of the atmospheric forcing and its influence on coastal flooding. This is to be done by developing a coupled wave-wind model. By coupling a Boussinesq or Green-Naghdi wave model, able to resolve wave run-up on steep slopes and breakwaters, to a Navier-Stokes model in generalized coordinates describing the atmospheric flow, the wind forcing is directly given by the pressure working on the free surface. This will significantly improve the nearshore computational capabilities with respect to atmospheric forcing and will reduce the uncertainties associated with surface drag coefficients. The project will deliver new robust and highly accurate simulation tool for near-shore flows. In addition, two secondments to an academic and industrial partner institution are already planned to broaden the network and differentiate the student's skills and knowledge. Furthermore, the project provides ample opportunities for professional exchange and networking with other academic and industrial partners.

The successful candidate must document knowledge on water wave kinematics as well as numerical modelling and practical experience with object-oriented coding (preferably in C++). Previous experience with working in HPC environments and with the nektar++ framework is accessed as an advantage. Applicants for the PhD position must hold a relevant Master's degree related to Hydraulic or Civil Engineering, Applied or Computational mathematics or a related field. A good command of oral and written English is also required. PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions.

According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

For this PhD position, the mobility rules of the MSCA-Doctoral network applies, i.e. the applicant must not have resided or carried out their main activity(work, studies, etc.) in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications, the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.

Wages and employment

Appointment and salary as a PhD fellow are according to the Ministry of Finance Circular of 15 December 2021 on the Collective Agreement for Academics in Denmark, Appendix 5, regarding PhD fellows, and with the current Circular of 11 December 2019 on the employment structure at Danish universities.
