Job description

The key theme of this PhD stipend is the relations between structural design and architecture with a particular emphasis in transformation of buildings, bio-based materials, and the upcycling of building waste materials and building components. The position is inherently based on trans-disciplinary theoretical and applied fields as it is placed at the intersection between architecture, structural engineering, advanced computation, and technology driven fabrication.

Desirably, you should have a background within either architecture or engineering and experience with research in integrated design environments and tutoring in structural design. The position is oriented towards the design fields, but with a clear focus on engineering and technological dimensions. With a background in architectural engineering, we expect that you will pursue explorations into architectural design principles and vice versa. If you have a background from architecture, the PhD study will be oriented towards engineering principles. In general, you are versatile in integrating architecture and structural performance based on an in depth understanding of the principles of the flow of forces in load-bearing structures as well as in principles related to material performance, computational design, architectural tectonics, and decarbonization processes for the built environment.

With the vacancy we invite qualified project proposals, research questions and-methods to explore novel applications of reclaimed materials in architecture, driven by structural analysis, computational design, digital fabrication, and carbon emission assessment methods. We invite applicants to formulate a short "project description" (2-5 pages), which is a suggestion for a PhD project within the theme mentioned above. This project description should include: one or more research questions, a study design including methods and theories for the research project and a time schedule.

Requirements
The candidate must have obtained a Master's degree before starting in the position.

Application
The application must contain:

  • A motivation letter
  • Updated curriculum vitae
  • Copy of educational degrees
  • Project description

You may obtain further information from Section Leader; Lea Holst Laursen e-mail: llhl@create.aau.dk, phone: +45 9940 7174, concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

Assessment
The assessment of candidates for the position will be carried out by qualified experts.
Shortlisting will be applied. This means that after the application deadline, the head of the department, with the assistance of the hiring committee, will select the applicants to be assessed. All applicants will be informed whether they have been shortlisted for assessment or not.

When the hiring process is completed, a final rejection will be sent to the applicants who are not considered for the position.

The hiring process at Aalborg University may include a risk assessment as a tool to identify potential risks associated with new hires, ensuring the safety, compliance, and integrity of the workplace.
