Job description

At Aalborg University Business School, one position, as PhD student within Business Data Science, is open for appointment on August 1, 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter. The PhD student will be enrolled in Aalborg University Business School’s Economics, Business, and Management PhD program. The position is part of the Carlsberg Foundation-funded Green Transition Policy Centre(GreenTraC) project, offering a unique opportunity to combine cutting-edge computational methods with sustainability transition research.

The position is affiliated to the IKE research group at Aalborg University Business School. The focus of the research group is on Innovation, Knowledge and Economic dynamics at different levels of aggregation. You are expected to contribute actively to the research and teaching activities of the IKE research group, but will, as part of the GreenTraC-project, also join a cross-organisational and interdisciplinary team working on developing and implementing machine learning and natural language processing approaches to analyse large-scale textual data from scientific publications, patents, industry documents, and policy sources. The work includes creating reproducible workflows for processing unstructured data, developing indicators for transition processes, and contributing to the broader goal of building data-driven methods that can complement and extend qualitative research approaches. As part of the PhD education, you will participate in relevant coursework, contribute to teaching activities, and have opportunities to present your research at various academic and practitioner venues.

The ideal candidate should hold a Master's degree in either Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Business Administration and Economics or a related field with strong programming skills, particularly in Python. Priority will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience with natural language processing, machine learning, and handling large-scale datasets. The position offers an excellent opportunity to develop expertise in sustainability transitions and innovation policy while applying advanced computational methods to real-world challenges. We expect strong analytical skills, experience with version control and collaborative development, and the ability to work in interdisciplinary teams. The candidate should have excellent English communication skills and be eager to contribute to an open science environment. Danish language skills are not required at the time of employment. Please note that non-Danish speaking employees will undergo a course in basic Danish language qualifications within the first two years of employment.
