Job description

Aalborg University contributes to the knowledge building of the global society as well as the development of prosperity, welfare and culture of Danish society. This is accomplished through research, research-based
education, public sector services and knowledge collaboration. Aalborg University educates students for the future and activities are based on a dynamic and transformative collaboration with the surrounding community.

AAU Energy is a dynamic engineering research department in continuous growth and inspiring surroundings. AAU Energy has a very international environment and covers all areas of clean and sustainable energy
systems of the future within electrical, thermal and mechatronic energy technology. AAU Energy has campuses in both Aalborg and Esbjerg, this position is in Esbjerg.

Esbjerg plays a central role in establishing an industry within the topics of sustainable energy transition and power-to-x, as the current offshore industry in Denmark is centralized around Esbjerg due to its geographical
location close to the North Sea.

The mission is to be world leading in both research and research-based education of the energy engineers of the future. AAU Energy has approx. 300 employees of many nationalities, of which 25 are administrative
staff. In addition, AAU Energy constantly has approx. 50-70 guest researchers from around the world.

Research and teaching are in the absolute world elite in the field of energy, and we have extensive and leading workshop and laboratory facilities, where research and innovation are carried out in direct collaboration with industry to a great extent.

The position is offered in relation to the research program"Offshore Process Control& Cybernetics" and the Associate Professor will be positioned to the“Esbjerg Energy Section” in Esbjerg. Research areas will be within process control and optimization with a special focus on green energy technology such as green and synthetic fuels. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the position, the applicant should have strong engineering qualifications in energy systems, with expertise in some of the
following topics: Process modeling, control engineering, applied mathematics, multivariable data analysis, test and validation, and instrumentation. Experience with plant-wide process analysis, renewable energy systems and green fuels, advanced monitoring, and fluid dynamics will be advantageous. Writing funding proposals and project management will also be a requirement in this position.

Teaching will primarily be in Aalborg University’s study programmes in Energy, Applied Industrial Electronics, Offshore Energy Systems, AI and Autonomous Systems, and Risk Safety Management, but also in other study programmes at the University. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the educations, the candidate must be able to cover teaching in some of the following subjects:
  • Fundamental control theory
  • Mechatronic and process modelling
  • Statistical and experimental test and validation
  • Real-time programming
  • Digital and analogue Input-Output(IO) analysis
  • General system and process engineering
  • Instrumentation and signal processing
  • Experimental testing in laboratories and fast prototyping
Expertise in student supervision is beneficial as a substantial part of the teaching is supervision of student project groups. Aalborg University’s teaching philosophy is based on problem-based learning(PBL), and,
therefore, knowledge and experience with project-based supervision and PBL(or similar) teaching techniques are preferred.

Within energy engineering the department is seeking competencies on carbon capture, carbon utilization, green fuels, and similar process systems. Here, documented collaboration between industry and academia
is valuable, as well as experience with funding and project management.
