Job description

A postdoc position is available to develop tools for characterizing the chemical configuration of tunnels and voids inside disordered materials, such as metal-organic framework glasses for gas storage and glassy solid electrolytes for batteries. For these materials it is important to tailor the scale and geometry of free volume, but most existing methods do not provide sufficient geometric information to distinguish pore shapes such as tunnels and voids.

In this project, the prospective postdoc will combine tools from materials chemistry and applied mathematics to address this challenge and develop such tools. Using topological data analysis, the aim is to derive descriptors of porosity and diffusion paths with information about both chemistry and topology in the studied disordered materials.

The position is part of the project“Deciphering Nanoporosity of Amorphous Materials using Topological Data Analysis” funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark. The prospective postdoc will become part of this project and collaborate with Associate Professors Lisbeth Fajstrup and Christophe Biscio, both from the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Aalborg University, in addition to international collaboration partners. The project will therefore involve aspects from e.g. materials chemistry, applied mathematics, computer science, and condensed matter physics. For example, this includes the application of persistent homology tools to characterize tunnels and voids in metal-organic framework glasses and glassy solid electrolytes.

Competences of the ideal applicant:

  • Hold a PhD degree in Materials Science, Computational Chemistry, or similar
  • Experience with at least two of the following topics: disordered materials(glasses), molecular dynamics simulations, machine learning applied to materials, and topological data analysis
  • Solid publication record within two or more of these topics
  • Ability and interest in working an interdisciplinary research environment
  • An integrative and cooperative personality with good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Fluency in English– written and oral

We are a dynamic workplace with high professionalism and efficiency, a good working environment and with a focus on work-life balance. We strive for a culture with collaboration that promotes openness and curiosity towards new initiatives and ideas and with a constructive approach to problem solving. As an employee at the department, you will be part of an international research environment, with a focus on innovation, knowledge sharing and excellency as well as interdisciplinary collaborations.
