Job description

The open source TSMS ModelarDB developed by Aalborg University will be used by the on-going research project“6G-XCEL” to manage extreme amounts of time series data. ModelarDB provides lossless and lossy compression by fitting mathematical functions, e.g., constant or linear, to time series within a user-defined error bound(possibly zero). This compression is combined with a scalable query processing engine that can execute queries on the compressed representation to yield a unique combination of high compression, fast data ingestion, and scalable aggregate query processing. ModelarDB is implemented in Rust and uses Apache DataFusion for query processing, Apache Arrow for in-memory storage, and Delta Lake with Apache Parquet for on-disk storage. More information about ModelarDB can be found at: https://github.com/skejserjensen/ModelarDB. The most recent version of ModelarDB can be found at: https://github.com/ModelarData/ModelarDB-RS.

Research content:

In the 6G-XCEL project, Aalborg University will work on extending and optimizing ModelarDB for managing time series in the settings of 6G-XCEL. As part of this, ModelarDB must be optimized for the domain specific requirements of 6G-XCEL., e.g., massive time series.

Requirements:

- Master and bachelor degrees in computer science or similar

- Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team

- Excellent communication skills in English, oral as well as written

- Good low-level software development skills, e.g., in C, C++, and/or Rust

- Experience with the Rust programming language

- Experience with time series compression(lossy and lossless)

Applicants with an excellent scientific background and publication record and experience with ModelarDB will be preferred.

Responsibilities:

- Participate in the 6G-XCEL research project

- Perform excellent scientific research

- Develop research prototypes and conduct experiments

- Integrate the proposed methods with or in ModelarDB

- Publish in leading international conferences and journals

- Participate in activities of the group and the department

Some teaching within the educations offered by the Department of Computer Science can be expected.
